New Year Nature Crowns!!

One of the activities that we do every New Year’s Eve is to make some sort of crown or party hat. In teh past we have mostly just colored in something free and printable and not gotten particularly fancy with it, but this year we decided that we needed to step up our crown game. The kids requested nature crowns, but we couldn’t think of a way to make them “New Year’s Eveish.” I considered make stick crowns and spraying them gold because gold seems to be my default on NYE, but then I had an epiphany! Half of the crown would be bare sticks (like winter and the old year…) and the other half would be greenery (spring and the new year!) we ended up adding some sticks with buds to bridge the two. These were fun and easy to make and better than a party hat any day!

New Year Nature Crowns

Materials:

  • cardbord
  • tape
  • old bare sticks
  • young budding sticks (you’ll need to cut these from a tree or shrub)
  • greenery
  • hot glue

Method:

Gather your materials and cut the cardboard into long strip two inches or so wide. You can join multiple strips with tape- ultimately you want a piece long enough to wrap around your head.

Make a band that fits around your head and secure with tape. (Do this for each crown you are making)

Lay out the order you’d like to adhere your sticks, putting the bare branches on one side, the green living branches on teh other and your budding twigs in the middle. An adult can start attaching them to the cardboard band with the hot glue.

You can put the sticks all the way around the crown or just in the front if you prefer. (They start to get pretty heavy when they go all the way around.) Celebrate the new year!
