Special Spot Prompts

The best way to start with a nature journal or in your special spot is to just be still and observe. Start by using your eyes, then another day close your eyes and just listen. Work through all of your senses without trying to record anything in your journal at first, just practice being mindful. It can be very challenging to sit still for many kids, so we often have an option for some directed movement. (Think about how you can quiet your mind by running for instance.) Don’t expect a five year old to sit and observe for thirty minutes, they will probably not do that. Start with five minutes and slowly build up their capacity instead. Once you are able to sit and make observations in your journal start trying to incorporate some of the prompts below or design your own to compliment what you are learning about. Just remember to tie it back to the place that you are. (There is some element of observation, it’s not a writing assignment unrealted to the place.)
