About Jessie

Welcome.

Wineberry Woods grew out of a silly song my kids came up with during our weekly trips to parks and the various adventures that followed. They love to find and eat wineberries along the trail. When we aren’t tromping through the woods making up songs about berries, I run Wineberry Woods, write books, draw pictures and am the founder of Wineberry Wood Press.

I believe firmly in hands on education over worksheets and that every child has the right to nature. I am the founder of Watershed Public Charter School, a public school that uses the environment and the arts as a tool to connect and deepen student understanding and achievement. I authored Watershed’s curriculum.

I was a professor of sculpture and drawing for twelve years and am an illustrator and environmental artist.

I was previously the Executive Director of Friends of Great Kids Farm. Great Kids Farm is a working farm and Environmental Education campus owned by Baltimore City Public Schools. Students used this hands-on project while visiting the farm to learn about plants, food systems, agriculture and healthy food choices.

You can find my work in Taproot Magazine, The Children and Nature Network, Lark Books, The botanical Anthology, Willow and Sage, the Simple Living Collection and more!

I am an avid chicken keeper, master gardener and permaculture designer. Most importantly I am the mother of two little boys who love nature.
